Using Geolocation in your Application Delivery Strategy to Offer a Personalised User Experience

Our advanced load balancer comes with a complementary geolocation database that, when combined with flightPATH traffic management, can be very handy if you ever need to route traffic based on the country the client resides in. There are many obvious use cases related to legal restrictions around privacy, health and broadcasting but it can also be used to engage better with your users through personalisation too.

For instance, your marketing department might use this feature to present a web page referring to a country’s national holiday or a major event taking place. You don’t necessarily need to route users to a specific page either; you might instead insert a frame, header or footer containing some relevant text, or feed those users a (HTTP) cookie and provide a discount or benefit later in the user’s journey.

What about presenting a different, easier on the eye theme when it’s night-time in the country a user resides in? You could present region specific news, event or training information or search results. This is a seemingly basic feature, but with some thought, the connection between a user and their place in the physical world can become something much more, should you wish it to. Even where you keep things really simple, it’s another great, easy to use tool to have at hand.

This feature is utilised via flightPATH rules which you can assign to one or more Virtual Services – it’s all pretty simple. For inspiration and a place to start, you’ll find some examples on our edgeNEXUS Github site. As you’d expect, you’ll find one dealing with the most common use case of only allowing users from a specific country to access a site or particular content on it. Check out some  pre written flightpath rules  on our App store

Do keep in mind that users could make use of proxy and/or VPN services to circumvent geolocation based restrictions, so you shouldn’t consider them fool proof – just ask a broadcaster.

flightPATH is a dynamic, event-based rule engine developed by edgeNEXUS to intelligently manipulate and route load balanced IP, HTTP and HTTPS traffic. It is highly configurable and powerful, yet very easy to use.
