Object-based Storage

File structures have evolved over the history of computing from flat files to hierarchical structures and back again.

Object-based storage is a schema that manages and manipulates data storage as distinct units, aka the objects. Breaking apart traditional files or folders, the objects, like customer records, unstructured records, digital archives, digital video, or machine-to-machine (M2M) data, are kept in a single store. Object-based data files contain the original information, relevant metadata, and a custom ID.

All objects reside in a storage pool and can be immediately accessed, speeding up retrieval. There is no need to open a 10GB database file to find one record or search for it, and it is ideal for enterprises with large amounts of data to leverage the efficiency and scalability of the cloud.

Object-based storage adds comprehensive metadata to the file, eliminating the tiered file structure used in file storage, and places everything into a flat address space, called a storage pool. This metadata is key to the success of object storage in that it provides a deep analysis of the use and function of data in the storage pool.
