What Is The Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things refers to the ever-growing network of Internet-enabled devices that can communicate with each other, with us, and more importantly, with a central system to deliver information.
The IoT tends to focus on smaller devices such as environmental sensors or embedded electronics and appliances.
Although conceptually the IoT doesn’t represent anything particularly new, it does present a number of challenges for both ends of the connection.
The IoT and Security Concerns
Many devices that previously had no Internet access, and were therefore deemed as “secure” will now be accessible over the Internet and subject to new levels of vulnerabilities. A hacker will always focus on the weakest link. Why attack a hardened firewall when there are weaker, more accessible smaller devices?
Challenges at the server end can also be significant. Firstly, the IoT is expected to involve many connections, thousands, even millions concurrently connecting and securing data. Considerations and compromises will need to be made between security, data loss prevention and performance to ensure a sound IoT strategy.
The IoT and Application Delivery
The following considerations must be made for application delivery infrastructure in order to ensure a controlled and secure process for IoT connections.

- Check server health at application level
- Provide authentication
- Provide encryption
- Traffic manipulation
- Prevent too many connections on backend systems
- Process server draining
The IoT and edgeNEXUS
Advanced load balancers, or Application Delivery Controllers (ADC) are full Layer 7 devices, it can read the content of both the requests and responses sent.
This allows for a more intelligent approach to managing application traffic. Data that you are not interested can be dropped before it reaches your application servers to help reduce load. It’s even possible to change the content of the message based on a condition. For example:
“IF the Source of the connection is in Germany THEN
Append the message with location=Germany
ELSE send the request to a different internal server”
